South Algonquin is at a turning point...

Council's own data shows that our community needs more resources than we are currently able to provide.

 

• Taxes are increasing while services are being cut.

• DNSSAB tells us we don't have enough housing.

• Businesses report staff shortages.

• We need transportation solutions

• We've lost our only bank and one of our two mechanics.​

 

Residential taxpayers carry too much of the cost. But our limited number of businesses can't carry more.

 

We live precariously in this beautiful place. ​​For too long, we have focused on how to divide a shrinking pie into smaller and smaller pieces. But there is a limit to how far we can stretch what we have.

In March 2024, Professor Robinson of Laurentian University showed council what will happen within two census periods. Our population is going to fall off of a cliff. We're only at 1000 residents now.

 

Are we going to accept the shrinking pie as inevitable? Or are we going to get to work and make the pie bigger so there's more to go around?

​The goal isn't growth for the sake of growth. It's a healthier, more balanced community with enough for everyone — not just for today, but forever.

The best part is we already have a lot of the ingredients we need to solve this problem:

• Resourceful full-time, part-time and seasonal residents with knowledge, skills and a desire to help

• Community organizations, non-profits, charities and local associations

• Different people, experiences and ideas

• An extraordinary landscape of forests, lakes and wilderness

• A strategic location at the gateway to Algonquin Park

• Small, medium and home-based businesses with good products, services and ideas

• Roads, trails and public spaces to build on

• Real opportunities in housing, transportation, trails and economic development
