Postcards as a Primary Source

I've recently discovered the hobby of 'deltiology', also known as postcard collecting. A search for an old postcard image of Whitney, Ontario sent me to the Toronto postcard show last month, and I returned to the Kitchener show in March by choice :-) What I found was impressive, to say the least. Postcard collectors, some of whom have over 100 000 individual items, bring all or part of their collections together to share and show, and sell and buy. What took me by surprise was the size of these collections, the dedication to the hobby, and the wealth of information these collectors maintain both in their collections and in their heads. I showed people an image of the postcard I was looking for, and many could say just by looking at it whether they owned it or not. It's like they have a rolodex in their minds! These postcards tell the story of places and times past, not only in the pictures, but in the technology used to produce them, and in the inscriptions and postmarks on the reverse. They're a wonderful source of primary historical information. I soooo see another research project here!
